Radiólogos Por Un Día

Radiologists for a day

6th Primary students became radiologists for one day.

On Wednesday, November 22nd, Doctors Raquel G. and Antonio A. visited us.  They are radiologists and the parents of Javier, a sixth grader and mate. They explained to us what radiology is and why it is important.

Radiologists for a day 0

We learnt that radiology is a medical specialty which consists of taking images of the body’s organs, muscles and bones for diagnostic and treatment. It is used not only to see what’s inside our body but also to detect diseases.

We also learnt that radiology is divided into four areas: X-rays, TAC, Echography and Magnetic Resonance. They are different   from each other and they use different apparatus to see what’s inside the body and if needed, the treatments to be used.

Career in radiology takes many years of study. First, you have to study basic medicine for 6 years. Later, 4 years of specialty in radiology and in the end, the medical practice in a hospital.

Radiologists use protective glasses (radiation glasses) and they wear coats, vests and aprons made of lead to protect them from dangerous radiation. Our guests brought these glasses and aprons. We tried them on and they were heavy. We tried jumping with the aprons on!

When they do radiological diagnostics, they do it in protected rooms. They can see the patients in the adjacent room where the radiology machines are located.

Echography is a diagnostic method of examining the chest area using ultrasound (high-frequency) waves to produce a recording, called an echogram. How do radiologists do it? They put cold, sticky gel on the area to be explored. The cream is for the machine to see inside your body easily. There is a screen where you can see the different internal organs like the kidneys, the heart, lungs, stomach, liver etc. We saw some of Javi’s internal organs during the talk.

We enjoyed the presentation especially the activities. They were fun and we learnt a lot. It’s a very good idea to do these things with real doctors because they show and give us very good explanations about medicine. We hope more doctors/specialists could visit us this year.
